These products incorporate trace element selenium (Se) into the structure of chalcones and flavonols, making these drugs highly potent in antioxidation, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and other applications. Among the present over 10,000 known natural and synthetic flavonoid molecules, oxygen atoms dominate, with selenium atoms, being in the same group of elements as oxygen atoms, nearly overlooked. According to the literature review, the synthesis of selenium-containing chalcones appeared in 1954, with no further research thereafter, let alone biological activity. Selenium-containing flavonols have not been reported except in our recent report. Therefore, our team has used a very concise three-step synthesis to internally produce a series of selenium-containing chalcones and flavonols, with almost no need for column chromatography separation, only requiring filtration, washing, and drying to obtain the target compounds. Their antioxidative, colorectal, and lung cancer properties surpass those of natural flavonols and the chemotherapy drug 5-FU. The product has obtained a patent in the Republic of China, and two patents are pending.

Our team is a collaboration across different schools and departments, with key members including Professor Tzenge-Lien Shih's organic drug synthesis team from the Department of Chemistry at Tamkang University; Professor Jih-Jung Chen's drug screening team from the Department of Pharmacy at National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University; and Dr. Chuan-Hsin Chang 's drug screening and animal experimentation team from the Herbal Medicine Research Center at Chang Gung University of Science and Technology. All team members are scholars with long-term research expertise in their respective fields. Professor Tzenge-Lien Shih is currently focused on synthesizing and developing selenium-containing flavonoid compounds, having published over 52 papers and obtained three relevant drug patents. Professor Jih-Jung Chen has been engaged in new drug development, health food, and cosmetics research for many years, having received 12 invention patents, published over 320 papers in SCI papers, and been honored as one of the "world's top 2% scientists”. Dr. Chuan-Hsin Chang is dedicated to developing novel drugs with anticancer effects. Her research results are expected to be applied in developing effective and less side-effect cancer drugs and treatment regimens.
