Physical function and social participation are key indicators of successful aging. However, older adults often struggle to maintain regular exercise due to lack of motivation or concerns about safety. To enhance mobility and active aging, our team has developed the “Smart Empowerment Dog,” a companion-pet-inspired system centered on assisted walking support for older adults. By integrating clinical know-how with mechatronic technology translation, the system combines patented technologies including forward-following navigation, dynamic body support, and automated visual cue gait training to provide a safe, engaging, and personalized exercise experience.
During walking activities, the Smart Empowerment Dog automatically follows within the user’s field of vision and guides exercise modes accordingly. The system features leash-assisted interaction, autonomous following, and obstacle avoidance capabilities. This project aims to deeply integrate disease prevention (protective care), health promotion (capacity enhancement), disability rehabilitation (functional recovery), and smart assistive technologies (empowerment) into daily life and community settings, thereby realizing the vision of a sustainable healthy society through active aging and joyful mobility.
In addition, our team extends digital health-related research technologies through technology transfer and translational applications, further developing assessment systems for healthy aging, intervention applications, and related assistive device designs.
